All aboard! Join a cast of deftly disparate characters dining drunkenly to navigate treacherous - emotional as well as geographic - terrain across the US by vintage rail car. It's life, it's death; it's coltish youth amidst jaded middle age; it's fine cuisine, it's life's excess fueled by copious amounts of cash. It's a send-up of the rich and the political in high-humored prose. The author's observations of people, in all of their zany humanness, are deeply-felt and nuanced. He loves all his characters, and I rooted for all of them, even the bloated and pompous food critic. This book proves that redemption is plausible and possible for everyone... well, maybe only those who extend a hand to others rather than stuffing hands into pockets.
Laugh out loud superb!
P.S. My husband and I traveled by overnight train, through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He likened the top berth to sleeping on an ironing board, so he cringed as well as laughingly related to the protagonist's squish into the upper bunk.

The Dining Car edition by Eric Peterson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Everyone in my book club enjoyed this book. Quick read, good character development and interesting plot.
A delightful book. Eric Peterson's writing style is educated, interesting and easy to read. I look forward to reading more of his work. Borrow it or buy it, but read "The Dining Car!"
The Dining Car introduced me to a new world in luxurious but never dull detail. The characters truly come to life, and the story held me interest throughout, building to a highly satisfying conclusion. I especially loved the author's deft skewering of celebrities from chefs to politicians. Even if you don't think this is your type of book, I bet you'll enjoy it!
This book is complete with great characters and an interesting storyline.
My highest praise is that this book is the first time in a very long time that I’ve been a little angry when I reached the end had no more pages to read.
Read this book now.
Eric Petersen develops an off-beat story around an eccentric gourmet food critic, a damaged football star, and a beautiful chef all traveling together around the country in a luxury railroad dining car. With such an odd premise the author never missed a beat in carrying the story to a fantastic journey to Washington DC.
Character development is superb. The storyline is unique, and I had a hard time putting this book down. From start to finish, I recommend this novel to anyone who appreciates fine writing/dining. I give this book 6 stars.
There are only a handful of books I'll re-read over the years...this is one of them.
Without any spoilers, I can tell you that this book is a "happily ever after" story.
Kudos to Eric Peterson, and his worthy editor(s). I'll look forward to their future works of art.
This often strange read is about a writer, his train car and the staff he hires to keep him fed/watered (with alcohol). Horace is a stuffy, elderly alcoholic to say the least. He demands perfection in his food and drink and Wanda (chef) and Jack (bartender) do their utmost to stick to his standards. When Horace's sister (powerful politician) is killed, the book got more interesting for me. Unlike many who have read this book, I just didn't connect to the characters. I found Horace to be utterly disgusting with his constant state of drunkenness. Jack seemed foolish and immature at times. Wanda was the only sane character. I loved the child that entered the picture towards the latter half of the book. Overall, it took me far longer to finish this one than it normally would as I didn't particularly care for the plot or characters.
